John P. Bilezikian, MD, PhD (hon), Silberberg Professor of Medicine at the Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons, Columbia University, is Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine for International Education and Research and Chief, Emeritus, of the Division of Endocrinology. He belongs to ASBMR (President, 1995-1996), the ISCD (President, 1999-2001), the IOF (Board of Governors, 1999-2015) the Endocrine Society, ASCI, the AAP, and AACE. He is Chair of the Endocrine Fellows Foundation. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the JCEM and as Senior Associate Editor of the JBMR. His books include The Parathyroids, The Aging Skeleton, Dynamics of Bone and Cartilage Metabolism, Principles of Bone Biology, and Osteoporosis in Men. He is Editor-in-Chief of the ASBMR’s Primer on the Metabolic Bone Diseases. He has served as Co-chair of every International Workshop on Primary Hyperparathyroidism and Hypoparathyroidism since 2002. Continuously funded by the NIH since 1974, he has published over 925 papers on the parathyroid disorders, vitamin D, and osteoporosis. Dr. Bilezikian has received the Distinguished Physician and Educator Awards of the Endocrine Society, and from the ASBMR, the Bartter Award, the Gideon Rodan Mentorship Award and the Neuman Award. From the ISCD, he received the First Annual Global Leadership Award and the Oscar Gluck Humanitarian Award. He has received two honorary PhD degrees from the Carol Davila School of Medicine in Romania and from the University of Pisa in Italy. He received the Distinguished Physician Award of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the Ellis Island Congressional Medal of Honor from the United States Government, and Parliamentary Medals of Honor from the Governments of Armenia and Brazil. In 2019, he received the Gold Medal for Outstanding Achievements in Medical Research from Columbia University.
