Robert H. Eckel, MD, FAHA, FACC, FNLA, is Professor of Medicine Emeritus in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Diabetes and Charles A. Boettcher Endowed Chair in Atherosclerosis at the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Campus. Dr Eckel is a distinguished alumnus of University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals in Madison. He completed a fellowship in metabolism and endocrinology at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.
Dr. Eckel’s translational research has incorporated data from populations, human subjects in the Clinical Translational Research Center, genetically modified mice, and tissue culture to pursue mechanistic relationships between metabolic disorders such as obesity/metabolic syndrome/diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Dr Eckel has more than 350 articles published in peer-reviewed journals including International Journal of Health Care, Diabetes, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Cell Metabolism, New England Journal of Medicine, and American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. He is past president of the American Heart Association, Obesity Society, Association of Patient Oriented Research and Medicine and Science of the American Diabetes Assosociaotn. Dr Eckel co-chaired the 2013 ACC/AHA Lifestyle Guideline for Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease and was a member of the 2013 ACC/AHA Cholesterol Guideline Committee. He is a previous director of the University of Colorado Translational Research Center and member of the Extramural Advisory Council of NIDDK.
