Dr. Maria Belalcazar is Associate Professor in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Vice Chair for Engagement in the Department of Internal Medicine, and Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. She completed her endocrinology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where she trained in clinical and research lipidology Her published research has mostly focused on cardiovascular disease prevention and on the effects of lifestyle intervention in people with diabetes. For over a decade, Dr. Belalcazar directed the Lipid Clinic at her institution. She believes strongly in the importance of educating the patient on disease self-management and in the need of bringing together the benefits of lifestyle intervention and pharmacology to prevent the onset or progression of cardiometabolic complications. Dr. Belalcazar is Chair of the AACE Cardiometabolic and Lipids Disease State Network and a member of the AACE Dyslipidemia Task Force.
