Steven Petak MD, JD, MACE, FACP
Dr. Petak received his MD from the University of Illinois in Chicago and has his JD, magna cum laude, from the University of Houston. He had his internship, residency, medical chief residency, and fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Texas at Houston. He practiced reproductive medicine in an academically oriented private practice for about 26 years before joining the academic endocrine group at Methodist in May 2013.
He is a past president of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the American College of Endocrinology, and the International Society for Clinical Densitometry. He serves as an associate clinical professor at Weill-Cornell Medical College and Adjunct at Texas A&M at the Houston Methodist Hospital where he is also the Division head of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism and holds the position of the Charles and Anne Duncan Centennial Chair in Endocrinology.
He has been the metabolic bone and densitometry consultant to the Johnson Space Center for the past 18 years and has been a part of the bone summit planning long duration space missions. He is a past chair of the board of councilors of the Texas Medical Association and has represented the Harris County Medical Society as councilor. He is on the writing committee and faculty for the bone densitometry courses offered by the ISCD.
His awards include a NIH physician scientist award, Master of the American College of Endocrinology, Yank Coble Public Service Award of the American College of Endocrinology, the ISCD Paul Miller Public Service Award, and ISCD Clinician of the Year. He has authored and co-authored numerous articles, editorials and guidelines including co-chairing the 2020 AACE osteoporosis guidelines.
