In her role at University Hospitals, Dr. Hatipoglu serves as Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, Vice Chair of UH System Clinical Affairs, Medical Director of the Diabetes & Metabolic Care Center, and holds the Mary B. Lee Chair in Adult Endocrinology at University Hospital Cleveland Medical Center since joining in 2020.
In addition, in 2022, with the introduction of the new Systems of Care Model, Dr. Hatipoglu was named the clinical leader for the Multispecialty Medicine System of Care.
Dr. Betul Hatipoglu, MD, has been appointed the UH Regional Director for Endocrinology for the community by the Department of Medicine in 2023.
Before joining UH, between 2008 and 2020, she was a staff endocrinologist at the Cleveland Clinic and associate professor of medicine at the Lerner School of Medicine until 2018. She was elected to serve on the board of governors, being the first endocrinologist ever appointed to that role in the history of Cleveland Clinic. She was promoted to a professorship the same year, in 2018.
She started her career as an assistant professor of medicine and medical director for the pancreas and islet cell transplant program at the University of Illinois at Chicago nearly eight years before coming to Cleveland.
She received numerous excellence in teaching awards from different institutions and mentorship awards. She was named a distinguished physician by UH in 2022.
Her research interests are in autologous islet cell transplant in chronic pancreatitis patients and new treatment modalities in type 1 diabetes and management of diabetes in population health.
