Dr Siraj is Professor and Chief of Division of Endocrine & Metabolic Disorders and Associate Dean for Clinical Research at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, VA. He is also David L. Bernd Distinguished Chair for Cardiovascular and Diabetes Research & Director of Strelitz Diabetes Center.
Dr. Siraj currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE), and in the past has served as President of the Philadelphia Endocrine Society and as a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine’s Endocrinology Subspecialty Board. He is currently serving as the Editor-in-Chief of the AACE self-assessment product, ASAP. He is well published in a variety of medical journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet & Nature Medicine, and has contributed chapters to medical text books. He has been an investigator in several multi center diabetes trials including the land mark ACCORD trial. Currently, Dr. Siraj’s research is focused on diabetes & cardiovascular disease, diabetic neuropathy, hypoglycemia, outcomes research, health disparities and collaborative research projects with biopharmaceutical companies.
For three decades, Dr. Siraj has traveled regularly to his native Ethiopia, where he helped establish the nation’s first endocrinology fellowship training program at Addis Ababa University. He has served in various senior leadership roles with many organizations established by Physicians of Ethiopia origin that support Ethiopian Healthcare and Medical Education. In 2014, the AACE recognized his work in Ethiopia when it presented him with its prestigious Outstanding Service Award for the Promotion of Endocrine Health of an Underserved Population. In 2021, the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP) awarded Dr. Siraj the Paul Florentino Volunteerism Award, for his decades of voluntary work to promote patient care, medical research and education within the US and internationally, in particular to the underserved communities. More recently Dr. Siraj received the EVMS Faculty Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2022 and the Inside Business/ Virginia Pilot’s Health Care Heroes award in 2023.
