Dr. Anna Casu is Associate Investigator at the AdventHealth Translational Research Institute in Orlando, FL and von Weller Family Chair in Type 1 Diabetes Research. Her career has centered on T1D epidemiology, prediction, pathogenic mechanisms, and applying advanced therapies to improve quality of life, outcomes and a final cure. Recent interests include adult onset T1D and the relationship with obesity/metabolism. She graduated from, and fellowshipped at, the University of Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy, which has the world’s 2nd highest rate of T1D. There, she published on the epidemiology of T1D and its preclinical stages. She became a Post-Doctoral Associate, then Research Associate, at the University of Pittsburgh. As a JDRF fellowship recipient, she worked to identify new prediction markers in T1D and LADA and a pre clinical islet xenotransplantation model to cure T1D. Dr. Casu was Unit Chief, Diabetes and Islet Transplantation-ISMETT, and Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, both based in Palermo, Italy. She created the diabetes unit, managing T1D, T2D and post-transplant diabetic patients in the solid organ transplant programs, coordinated the islet transplantation program, and directed the laboratory staff and procedures.
